1. Purpose & Scope

2. When Fire Watch is Required

⚠️ A Fire Watch is REQUIRED when:

Hot work within 35 feet of intumescent-coated surfaces Hot work near flammable liquid storage (solvents, intumescent pails) Hot work in areas where sparks/slag can travel to coated surfaces Hot work on steel that has previously been coated with intumescent When fire detection systems are impaired or not present During application of intumescent when other trades are performing hot work nearby

3. Fire Watch Personnel Requirements

✓ Fire Watch Personnel MUST:

Understand alarm and evacuation procedures
Have a clear line of sight to the hot work area
Remain on duty during hot work + 60 minutes after

5. Pre-Hot Work Inspection Checklist

📋 Must be completed BEFORE any hot work begins:

All combustible materials removed or protected within 35 feet Flammable liquids (intumescent, solvents) removed or covered with fire blankets Floor sweeps cleaned of combustible debris (no standing solvent) Fire extinguishers are charged and accessible Fire watch person is present and equipped Sprinkler system (if present) is operational Welding screens / blankets in place to contain sparks Area is adequately ventilated (no solvent vapor accumulation) Fire alarm / emergency numbers posted and accessible Hot work permit (if required) is posted and approved

6. During Hot Work Procedures

⚠️ Fire Watch Responsibilities DURING Hot Work:

Maintain constant visual observation of the work area
Watch for sparks, slag, or embers that could ignite intumescent coating
Monitor for solvent vapor accumulation - stop work if odors are detected
Keep fire extinguisher ready and accessible at all times
If fire occurs: sound alarm, attempt to extinguish with extinguisher, call 911
Communicate with welder/worker - stop work immediately if conditions become unsafe

7. Post-Hot Work Requirements (60-Minute Fire Watch)

⏱ CRITICAL - 60-MINUTE FIRE WATCH REQUIRED:
Intumescent coatings can smolder for 30-60 minutes before igniting into open flame. Fire watch MUST remain on duty for a minimum of 60 minutes after hot work stops.
